Warsan Shire

Warsan Shire is a writer, poet, editor, and teacher. Born in Kenya in 1988 and raised in London by Somali parents, she has read her work extensively as an internationally touring poet. Her debut pamphlet Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth (flipped eye) was published in 2011. In 2013 she was selected as London’s first Young Poet Laureate, and won the inaugural Brunel University African Poetry Prize. She is poetry editor at SPOOK magazine, and teaches workshops internationally and online, using poetry to explore memory and voice, and heal trauma.
