Andre Dubus
Andre Dubus (1936–1999) was the author of nine works of fiction. Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, he lived much of his life in Haverill, Massachusetts. In 1986, he was struck by a car, but continued to write though he was confined to a wheelchair. His 1991 collection of essays, Broken Vessels, deals with this accident. He wrote his last short story collection, Dancing After Hours, in 1996, and another book of essays, Meditations from a Moveable Chair, in 1998. His awards include the PEN/Malamud Award, the Rea Award for excellence in short fiction, the Jean Stein Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Boston Globe‘s first annual Lawrence L. Winship Award, and fellowships from both the Guggenheim and MacArthur Foundations.
