Sophiatown Symphony

Issue #167
Spring 2026

Fourth Movement

I was a man with one cow,
one cow and no wife. I was a man
with clean shirts and no wife and one cow.
I had strong shoes, pants with no knees.
I had a bed. I was a man who slept
without his shoes, dreaming of one wife
and two cows. My shirts, which I did not
wear to bed, were clean. I was a man
with one cow, clean shirts and strong shoes.
I liked to walk. I walked past homes of men
with wives and no cows, men with holes
in their shoes and strong shirts. I had a home.
I had a home and one cow and no wife
and no knees in my pants. I was a man.
